Happy Mother's Day
Mother’s Day is a day for many people to show their appreciation towards mothers and mother figures worldwide. It is an annual event but is held at different dates in the calendar, depending on the country.
Early Mother's Day celebrations can be dated back to the spring celebrations to honor Rhea, the Mother of the Gods, in ancient Greek civilization, according to some sources. Later, Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom was traditionally a day for people to visit the church where they were baptized, although it now also celebrates motherhood in modern times.
The modern-day origins of Mother's Day can be attributed to two women – Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis, who were important in establishing the tradition in the United States. Around 1870, Julia Ward Howe called for Mother's Day to be celebrated each year. It continued to be held in Boston for about 10 years under her sponsorship, but died out after that. Other sources say that Juliet Calhoun Blakely initiated Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the late 1800s. Her sons paid tribute to her each year and urged others to honor their mothers.
In 1907, Anna Jarvis held a private Mother's Day celebration in memory of her mother, Ann Jarvis, in Grafton, West Virginia. In 1908, she played a key role in arranging a church service that attracted 407 children and their mothers. A Mother’s Day International Association was founded in 1912 to promote the holiday in other countries. Mother’s Day has grown increasingly popular since then.

Modernisation of Post Offices
The Government plans to set up 1000 Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and carry out computerization of Post Offices in the country as part of its ongoing modernization and upgradation drive.
The Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Shri Sachin Pilot informed the Lok Sabha today that the Department of Posts proposes to set up 1000 ATMs. 820 Head Post Offices have been identified for setting up ATMs across the country. Shri Pilot said that remaining 180 Post Offices will be identified during implementation phase. Of these a maximum 100 ATMs would be set up in Andhra Pradesh.
The Minister said nearly 25000 Departmental Post Offices have been computerized. The Department offers a number of premium services like Speed Post, Express Parcel Post, Logistics Post etc. to generate additional revenue for the Department, he added.
Amarnath Yatra: Post offices to also register pilgrims from May 15
Srinagar: The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) on Monday said 100 post offices across the country would register devotees for the annual pilgrimage this year. The post offices are located in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar and Gujarat, an SASB spokesman said.
The list of all the 100 post offices was available on the website of the Board, he said. The post offices would start registering pilgrims from May 15, the spokesman said. The pilgrims could also register on-line on the website of the Shrine Board from May seven onwards, he said.
Intending pilgrims needed to obtain health certificates from registered medical practitioners before seeking a Yatra permit, the spokesman said. "Even those Yatris who register on-line shall need to furnish health certificates for embarking on the pilgrimage," he said.
